Our community day was held at North Mississippi Regional Center. Located in Oxford, NMRC is one of five comprehensive regional centers in Mississippi. It operates under the State Department of Mental Health and carries a license as an Intermediate Care Facility for mental retardation. It sits on a 220-acre containing 12 residential cottages and housing 280 clients.
Upon arrival, we met with Judy Cooper, director of staff development, who gave us of tour of the facility. First on the agenda was the Hart Building which housed social services, outpatient therapy, nutrition services, OT/PT, nursing, dentistry and the pharmacy. Next, we viewed the NMRC movie, which gave general information and rules and regulations that all group visitors view.
After touring the Hart Building, we toured the Hudspeth Building. The actual community day was held in this building. Along with NMRC staff, we prepared for the pep rally that was to be held later that day. We painted signs, and decorated the gym, and waited the arrival of the football team. After the clients and the football team arrived, we handed out pom poms and posters to the clients. Then, we assisted staff in getting the clients posters autographed. After the event was over, we helped clean up. The day ended on a good note. (Reported by Valerie Murry)
