School of Nursing Home

SoNShine Day Fall 2006

On November 6, 2006, our nursing students collaborated with area service organizations to serve the community. Our students, faculty advisors, and several staff members performed 16 different service projects around the state of Mississippi at locations including: Habitat for Humanity, Gateway Missions, Stewpot, American Red Cross, Coats for Kids, a high school health fair, a community health fair, and Mustard Seed.

The University of Mississippi School of Nursing values community service as a component of education and development. Service projects provide opportunities for faculty, staff and students to demonstrate the professional values through value-based behavior: caring, altruism, respect for human dignity, integrity, social justice, ethical principles, and cultural sensitivity. Although the school has a longstanding history of participation in service related activities, i.e. Habitat for Humanity, community screenings, FEMA warehouse, etc, SoNShine Day ensures appropriate time allocation and corporate priority for service projects involving all of the academic programs.

A SoNShine Day will be scheduled each spring and fall term. These designated dates will allow students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to volunteer in community service projects. Participants are required to commit 4 hours of community service each fall and 4 hours each spring.
