SON Faculty & Staff Receive Grant Awards

Dr. Terry Doddato and Dr. Anne Norwood recently received the HRSA grant, which will be used to expand the Johnson School-Based Clinic to the additional schools in the JPS system of Brown and Rowan.

The grant period is July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2013 and is $373,334.00 per year for a total of about $1.8 million.

Director of Student Affairs Christina Vanderloo recently received a HRSA Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship award of $51,473.00 to be distributed among graduate students. These funds are used to provide financial support for registered nurses in advanced education nursing programs.

Dr. Kaye Bender, Dr. Sharon Lobert and Dr. Virginia Lee Cora were recently awarded more than $1.2 million in grant money for the funding of the Geriatric Psych-Mental Health Consortium grant submitted to HRSA in December.

This three year grant seeks to establish a statewide consortium for Geriatric NP and Psych-Mental Health NP education in collaboration with USM, MUW, DSU and ASU with specialty courses offered at UMMC.

The continued development of this statewide consortium will serve as a model for meeting other nursing education needs in the state of Mississippi.  This collaborative effort is particularly important as nursing education in our state is faced with limited resources for new program development and delivery.

Dr. Karen Winters recently received a $55,000 grant through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's program, New Connections: Increasing Diverse Perspectives to RWJF Programming to complete her latest research project titled, Examining racial variation in persistently and episodically high out-of-pocket health care costs and financial burden associated with chronic illness, from June 2008 through June 2009.

This grant supports Dr. Winters' work in racial health disparities.
