The UMMC Advantage
For the past 60 years, our School of Nursing has been providing the nursing community with excellent, well-prepared nurses. We are the only Nursing School in the State of Mississippi to be located on an Academic Health Science campus.
This means that on our campus, we have four major hospitals serving every population in Mississippi. Our students receive unique experience by participating in the clinical settings of these hospitals.
Since our campus has the only Children's Hospital and the only Level One Trauma Center in the State, our students can truly get the experience required in the field and population of their choice.
There's strength in these numbers:
- The School of Nursing was the first nursing education program in the state to offer a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- The world's first heart and lung transplants were performed here.
- UMHC is home to Mississippi's only:
- Bone marrow transplant unit
- Organ transplant unit
- Neonatal and pediatric intensive care units
- Pediatric emergency department
- Pediatric cardiovascular surgery program
- More than 27,000 patients are admitted to UMHC every year.
- Annual outpatient and emergency visits number over 500,000.
- UMHC currently has a staff of over 1,200 nurses.
- UMMC was awarded designation as a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health in 2003.
