RN to BSN - Application Process

 

Admissions Information

The Advanced Standing (RN-BSN) program is offered through distance learning at the UMC site in Jackson and the DeSoto Center site at Southaven, MS. Courses are delivered on-line although some class attendance on the campus site may be required. These infrequent classes will meet through interactive distanced learning using compressed video transmission between the two sites.

RN to BSN Admission Criteria

Admission to the undergraduate program is based on evaluation of the following data by the Undergraduate Admission and Progression Committee:

1. A signed, completed application

2. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. The GPA in required prerequisite course work also will be considered in the admission process.

3. Completion of required prerequisite courses with a minimum of grade C in each course. Applicants may apply for admission when the number of prerequisite courses completed, plus those on the plan of study, equals 63 semester hours. All prerequisite courses (63 semester hours) must be completed before beginning ANY course.

4. An associate degree or diploma in nursing from an approved school of nursing (NLN or CCNE).

5. Evidence of current unrestricted licensure (RN) to practice in the United States and eligibility for licensure in Mississippi and/or privilege to practice in a state in which the student will have clinical practice. Accepted applicants that complete their associate degree nursing programs in the spring semester immediately prior to admission to the University of Mississippi School of Nursing RN-BSN program will be allowed to enroll in non-cllinical courses in the first semester of the program (summer), but must provide evidence of RN licensure prior to enrolling in second semester (fall) courses in order to continue in the program. Vertification of current unrestricted license is required yearly for RN students.

In unusual instances, the Undergraduate Admission and Progression Committee may consider applicants who do not meet the full admission criteria.

RN to BSN Application Process

Applications are accepted beginning July 1 of the year prior to the desired year of enrollment. Applications are reviewed in November for early notification (Early Decision),and again after the January 15 application deadline date.

 

Early Decision Application Process

 

To be considered for Early Decision, the following must show evidence of high scholastic achievement and must meet the following conditions:

  1. The application must be complete and in the Office of Student Records and Registrar by November 1
  2. Thirty (30) hours of pre-requisite courses must be completed of which 14 of these hours are in the pre-requisite natural sciences and mathematics

Applicants that are accepted in the Early Decision review will be notified in December.

 

Applications that are not accepted for Early Decision are reviewed with all applications after the January 15 application deadline date.

 

The deadline date for applications to be complete and in the Office of Student Records and Registrar is January 15. After this date, completed applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis until all positions are filled.

 

Individuals whose applications were complete and who have met all admission criteria but were not admitted, will be granted the one-time option of having their application considered in the applicant pool for the following year.

 

In order for your application to be complete, we must receive:

  1. A signed application form

  2. A nonrefundable $25 application fee made payable to the University Medical Center

  3. A completed Plan of Study Form

  4. A completed Personal Statement Form (will be considered in the application evaluation and selection process)

  5. A copy of your current nursing license. RN students are required to have a valid Mississippi unrestricted nursing license and/or legally authorized to practice in Mississippi. Verification of current unrestricted license is required yearly for RN students.

  6. Official transcript from EVERY college attended, sent directly from each college to the Office of Student Records and Registrar. RECEIPTS SUBMITTED AS PROOF THAT TRANSCRIPTS HAVE BEEN REQUESTED WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

  7. Transcripts in the original sealed envelop can be hand delivered to the registrar's office at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
  8. A recent 2"x 2" photograph to be used for verification of records (optional). Please write your name on the back of the photograph.

  2. All transcripts become the property of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and cannot be returned to the applicant or forwarded to another school or individual. Transcripts must be sent directly by the school to the Office of Student Records and Registrar.
  3. FACSIMILE DOCUMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  4. Transcripts must be submitted to The Office of Student Records and Registrar at the end of each semester until all prerequisite requirements are completed.
  5. Report any name, address, or phone number change to the Office of Student Records and Registrar.
  6. DO NOT send application materials to the School of Nursing.
  7. ALL grades, including failing grades and grades on repeat courses, are used to calculate pre-admission grade point averages.
  8. The applicant is responsible for notifying the Office of Student Records and Registrar of all changes to the Plan of Study.
Additional Program Information and Requirements
  • Applicants accepted into the program will receive additional information regarding health requirements, program orientation, class schedule, textbooks, and other important information.

  • All students enrolled in the program must hold current certification in Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in either the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross) or the Health Provider (American Heart Association) which includes the required Adult, Child and Infant Life Support.

  • RN students are required to have a valid Mississippi unrestricted nursing license and/or legally authorized to practice in Mississippi. Verification of current unrestricted license is required yearly for RN students.
