BSN Program - Undergraduate Prerequisite Course Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree

(For both Traditional and Accelerated BSN programs)

Please note: The School of Nursing does not offer individual tours, so if you would like to tour the SON, you will need to come on one of the scheduled tour dates.

 

Natural Science & Mathematics - A minimum of eight courses (27 semester hours)

(Science survey courses or courses for non-science majors are not acceptable for transfer credit.) Natural science courses taken more than 10 years ago will not be accepted for transfer credit.

 

General Chemistry I with lab - (4 semester hours)

Biology Elective with lab - (4 semester hours) Must be a general biology course with lab for science majors.

  • Please note: General Chemistry II with lab - (4 semester hours) may be taken to meet this requirement.

 

Microbiology - (4 semester hours) One course with a laboratory.

Human Anatomy and Physiology - (6 to 8 semester hours) - Two courses in sequence with labs, which include the study of structure and function of the human body.

College Algebra or higher level math - (3 semester hours)

Introduction to Computer Use
- (3 semester hours) Not a programming course.

Statistics - (3 semester hours) - Includes an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics, including measures of central tendency, variability, correlation, t tests, z tests, ANOVA, chi-square, hypothesis testing, p levels and confidence intervals.

 

Psychosocial Sciences - A minimum of six courses (18 semester hours)

General Psychology - (3 semester hours)

Introductory Sociology - (3 semester hours)

The Family - (3 semester hours) - Course about family living or marriage and the family.

Human Growth and Development through the Life Cycle (3 semester hours) - In a senior college, Developmental Psychology, to include development from infancy through old age. In a junior college, Human Growth and Development, to include development from infancy through old age.


Nutrition - (3 semester hours)


Suggested Courses for Electives - (3 semester hours):

Abnormal Psychology Economics History Social Problems
Anthropology Geography Political Science  

 

Humanities & Fine Arts -A minimum of six courses (18 semester hours)

English Composition - (6 semester hours)

Speech - (3 semester hours)

Fine Arts - (a minimum of 3 semester hours) - May include art appreciation, drama and theater.

Suggested Courses for Electives (6 hours in either humanities or fine arts elective):

Art Foreign Languages Literature Philosophy Journalism
Drama History Music Survey of Religion  

 

Unacceptable Courses

None of the required courses listed, described or recommended above may be met by the following: courses in physical training, military science or dogmatic religion; course credit granted without college level testing.

 

Note: All prerequisite courses must be completed at an accredited college or university, including four-year institutions and community colleges.
