Admissions Information

Admission Criteria

Admissions to the Master’s program is based on evaluation of the following data by the Student Admission and Graduation Committee.

1. A signed, completed application

2. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited institution (NLN or CCNE) which included upper division theory and clinical practice courses in nursing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. RN applicants who are enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program who are within 8 semester hours of completing degree requirements may be considered.

3. Clinical experience as a registered nurse is required only for the Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track (1 year intensive care preferred).

4 Evidence of current unrestricted licensure (RN) to practice in the United States and eligibility for licensure in Mississippi and/or privilege to practice in a state in which the student will have clinical practice.

5. Three acceptable references.

6. Professional portfolio.

7. Preadmission counseling.

8. Satisfactory scores on the GRE (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) taken within 5 years.

9. Official transcript from all schools attended.

In unusual instances the Graduate Admission and Progression Committee may consider applicants who do not meet the admission criteria.

The School of Nursing reserves the right to offer programs based upon the number of acceptable applicants admitted. When a program will not be offered due to limited enrollment, the applicant will be notified and other admission options will be explored.

Residence

The candidate shall earn the equivalent of 1 year full time study in graduate courses in nursing at the School of Nursing. These credits may be earned in full-time or part-time study.

Admission to Candidacy

At the time a student begins the last semester of course work taught on the Medical Center campus, application must be made for admission to candidacy. The student must have an overall GPA of a 3.0 or better to be admitted to candidacy.

Time Limit for Degree Requirements

All requirements for the MSN degree must be completed within a six-year time span.
