Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is part-time study available?

A. Yes, there is a part-time plan of study that extends the program over eight semesters. Didactic classes meet on an alternating weekend format.

Q. Where will I do clinical?

A. Most clinical will be done at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in a variety of clinical settings. A large portion of clinical will be in the UMC-NICU, which is the state’s only Level III tertiary center for high-risk newborn care.

Q. Can I do any clinical at a site closer to my home town?

A. With faculty approval, this may be possible in the last semester's clinical courses. Certain criteria must be met for this to be arranged, however.

Q. How will the clinical hours be scheduled over the semester?

A. A majority of the clinical is scheduled in concentrated blocks of time during the semester rather than smaller amounts of time throughout the semester. This provides greater continuity of care for the infants and families you will be working with.

Q. Can I work while going to school?

A. Full-time employment is discouraged while in the program as a full-time student. The concentrated clinical focus during the last two semesters often requires students to limit the time they engage in outside employment during that time.

Q. Will the program prepare me to take the NCC certification exam?

A. The program meets all educational requirements for graduates to take the NCC certification exam for neonatal nurse practitioners.
