Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

 

What is a competitive GPA?
  • For the traditional BSN, the advanced standing RN-BSN, and the dual option RN-BSN-MSN programs you must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and anything you can do to bring up your GPA would better your chances.
  • For the accelerated second degree BSN requires a GPA of 3.0.
  • For the MSN program, you must have a 3.0.

What are the class schedules like?

  • Typically classes for the undergraduate programs are from 8-5, but every day's schedule is different. At the beginning of each semester the students get a course calendar that outlines their schedule for the semester. *clinicals will vary.
  • The RN-BSN classes are online and meet a few times in person each semester.
  • The classes for the MSN and DNP programs meet on Fridays and Saturdays, up to 8 times a semester. Many classes are online. Some of these do not meet in person and others may meet a few times in person during the semester. 
  • PhD Classes meet on Thursdays.

Is there an entrance exam that you have to take before entering the BSN program, MSN program?

  • We do not require an entrance exam for any of the undergraduate programs.
  • All MSN students must take the GRE exam.

Is part-time study available?

  • We do not offer any part-time study for ungraduate programs.
  • The RN-MSN, MSN and PhD prgrams can all be completed on a part time basis.

When can I apply?

  • At the beginning of July each year, we post the applications on the Web site. You can apply for our programs anytime between July and January 15.
  • For the RN-MSN, the deadline to apply is February 28.
  • For the MSN program, the deadline to apply is March 31.
  • The deadline for early decision is November 1st.
  • All completed applications must be mailed in to the office of student records and registrar at the following address:

When does the academic year start?

  • Our academic year for the traditional BSN program and the accelerated second degree BSN program begins at the end of May each year.
  • For the RN-MSN, the academic year begins at the beginning of June.
  • Our MSN, PhD and DNP programs begin in August.

Is financial aid or scholarships available?

  • Yes. We have many opportunities for financial aid and scholarships available to students upon being accepted into our program. More information about financial aid and scholarships is provided to the student upon acceptance.

What is the ACT requirement?

  • For our traditional BSN program, each student must have a minimum ACT score of 21.

What if I don't have a 21 on my ACT?

  • We encourage students to retake the ACT to obtain a 21 or better. Please note that the higher your score, the more competitive the applicant will be.

Do I have to submit an ACT score for the accelerated BSN program, and does it have to be a 21 as well?

  • You still have to submit an ACT score when you apply to the accelerated BSN program. However, your ACT score is not used as an admission criteria. Therefore, there is not a minimum score. Instead, your GPA from your bachelor's degree is used as admission criteria.

Do I have to complete all of the prerequisites before I apply?

  • For the traditional BSN program, Accelerated BSN and RN-MSN programs, you must have completed a minimum of 30 hours (of those 30 hours, 14 hours must be math and science) to apply. The rest of your required prerequisites must be completed by the time you enter the program.

Can I be admitted into the program in the fall, spring, summer....etc?

  • We only admit students once a year. *refer to question about when programs start.

Can I live on campus?

  • UMMC does not offer on-campus housing. However, there are many apartments, rental, and housing opportunities in the Jackson area.

How many students do you accept each year?

  • The number of students that we accept each year for each program is dependent upon the number of students who apply each year, and how many students we can accommodate. Therefore, the number of students we accept each year varies from year to year.

Is there a waiting list?

  • The School of Nursing does not have a waiting list to enter the program. Each year a number of students are selected from the persons who apply. A percentage of the remaining qualified applicants are then placed on an alternate list. Each time an admitted applicant declines their acceptance, an alternate is offered the place. After the first week of school, the alternate list is dropped. All remaining applicants must reapply to be considered for the next year.

Do you have an ADN or LPN program?

  • No. Our nursing programs start at the BSN (baccalaureate) level only.

Can I take my prerequisites on the UMMC campus?

  • No. All of our students have to take their pre-requisites at another university, college, or community college. We only offer nursing courses at our school of nursing.

Is there a limit on the number of community college or transfer hours I can get before applying?

  • No. Since all of our students have to take their prerequisites at another university, college, or community college, we do not have a limit on the number of transfer hours or community college hours.

If I want to participate in the BSN program on the Oxford Campus, do I need to take my pre-requisites there?

  • Yes. Since there are a limited number of spots at the oxford campus, those students who have taken their pre-requisites at the University of Mississippi get first priority. Therefore, we encourage students to apply for freshman early entry at the oxford campus by November 1st of your freshman year.

What schools participate in your freshman early entry?

  • Belhaven college, Millsaps College, Tugaloo College, and The University of Mississippi all participate in our freshman early entry program. You must apply by November 1st of your freshman year at one of these colleges to be considered.
