Brown Elementary and Rowan Middle School Health Centers

JohnsonBrown and Rowan Health Centers opened academic year 2008-2009. They followed the highly successful pattern of the Johnson Health Center in creating an environment that is not only efficient and effective in providing health care services, but one that is open, comfortable and most importantly child friendly.

These school based health centers will focus not only on health screenings, but will also include age appropriate educational 'mini-seminars' to all children.

A thorough assessment will be performed to determine which health-related educational topics are necessary. This assessment will be performed on teachers, students, parents and staff. Information retrieved from these sources will provide the UMMC SON faculty providers with a generalized guide, which will be utilized when planning the topics appropriate for these children.

Parents will also be invited to share in these educational seminars so that the parents at home can support the information presented. This will reinforce the information being taught which will increase the retention of the knowledge for the child.

Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) will be performed according to the guidelines set forth by the State of Mississippi, Division of Medicaid. These screenings are valuable in that the Division of Medicaid accepts them for the continuation of activated Medicaid services.

Furthermore, providing these services on-site alleviates the need for parents to take off from work to seek a health care provider for the same service. This will save the parents time and money. In addition, if any abnormal findings should occur, referral to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Baptist Health System can be accomplished easily and effectively due to our affiliation and support with these excellent medical facilities.

The two proposed NMSBHC will provide an accessible source of primary and episodic health services to all students Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on the school campus.

Services will include comprehensive physical/mental health assessment, vision and hearing screening, treatment for acute and chronic illness as well as referral to appropriate health care when illness or treatment is out of the scope of practice for the nurse practitioner.

Comprehensive assessments, including all recommended screenings consistent with EPSDT screenings will also be performed on a regular basis on children who are in need of this screening in order to maintain their Medicaid status.

A comprehensive list of all healthcare activities to be performed is as follows:

  1. Evaluate acutely ill students after triage by office staff and provide acute care to students and faculty/staff for illness or injury.
  2. Prescribe appropriate medicines for children after being seen and when deemed necessary.
  3. Provide laboratory testing and screenings when necessary. This includes (but is not limited to) hemoglobin, urinalysis, and testing for strep throat. Refer to appropriate health services for further testing when necessary.
  4. Conduct vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings according to state regulations.
  5. Provide a school-wide screening every year to all students. This will include vital signs, height/weight and BMI, vision, hearing/ear assessment, cardiovascular, respiratory, scoliosis, musculoskeletal, and developmental screening on all students at an age-appropriate level. Follow-up on any students whose screening is not within normal limits will be performed.
  6. Monitor immunization compliance in record keeping and provided immunizations to students.
  7. Administer medications to students if necessary and when needed.
  8. Provide health education programs to students and staff on a monthly basis.
  9. Provide a health related theme bulletin board for students on a monthly basis.
  10. Refer students to outside care providers and coordinate follow-up as needed.

Provide ongoing care for student with chronic illnesses enrolled at the assigned locations, including but not limited to, identification of illness, patient and parent education, staff education, and emergency planning. For some, SBHCs are the only source of regular care for children without medical coverage (Baquiran, Webber, & Appel, 2002). Furthermore, Medicaid costs have been reduced by utilizing SBHCs. In our present SBHC at Johnson, a recent study performed on parents of these children who utilize the clinic evidenced the number of Emergency Department visits decreased due to the onsite clinic located in the elementary school.

Ongoing assessments, medical care as well as treatments of chronic illnesses such as asthma, seizures, eczema, psoriasis, and obesity will be performed on a routine basis. Additionally, our clinic staff will have the capability of diagnosing and treating common childhood illnesses as well as providing one on one educational sessions for those children and parents regarding medical findings.

Faculty/staff health education will be provided on a monthly basis for all faculty and staff. Educational seminars will be provided during after school hours in order for all faculty/staff to have the opportunity to participate.

Health screenings will be offered for faculty and staff once a year. These health screenings will include vital signs, height/weight, BMI, vision/hearing screening, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal screenings. Further in depth evaluation will be performed on those screenings that were not within normal limits. Furthermore, handouts on common disease processes will be available for the faculty and staff. Additionally, the clinic will always be available for the faculty/staff for free blood pressure checks.
