Sheila P. Davis is a Professor and Assistant Dean of Doctoral Studies in the School of Nursing and Deputy Director for the Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health (MIGMH). She joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center in March 1999. Dr. Davis has held faculty positions at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Oakwood College, and Alcorn State University.
Dr. Davis’ research centers on obesity among ethnic minority children and health disparities in vulnerable populations. She conducted early research in the state which informed of the increasing problem of obesity in African American children in urban and rural settings.
This work has been presented locally, regionally and nationally and is published in a number of publications. Presently, she is developing a multidisciplinary-focused model to predict obesity and metabolic factors in children. As Deputy Director of the Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health, research and service-type activities related to development of a national model to eliminate health disparities, are carried out in four cores: Health Services, Health Education, Center for Health Informatics and the Research Core. Partnered with the Institute are the majority of the colleges and universities of the state, the Mississippi State Department of Health, Mississippi Diabetes Foundation, Mississippi Hospital foundation and Mississippi Primary Healthcare organization. This work, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, is in its second year of funding. Dr. Davis is also the founder and editor of the Online Journal of Health Ethics.
