The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is one of the first medical centers in the world and in this country to establish a Geospatial Information Services program.
This department is housed in the School of Nursing (SON) where staff conduct research utilizing this technology, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). Dr. Fazlay Faruque serves as department director.
Dr. Faruque, a registered professional geologist in the state of Mississippi, is the recent recipient of the UMMC’s Excellence in Research Gold Award based on his extramural research funding amount of over 1 million dollars.
His expertise in GIS is in the areas of health sciences, environment, planning, natural hazards, water resources and infrastructure management and seventeen years of experience in using GIS and Remote Sensing software. His collaborative work with NASA includes fieldwork, data analysis and preparation of final reports for geo-environmental studies.
This department houses a large format plotter, hand held GPS, digital camera and all major GIS and RS software such as ArcGIS, ERDAS and ENVI. SON faculty members have full advantage of writing grants that require spatiality in such technology. GIS and RS programs offer research collaboration and technical support for funded projects.
The School of Nursing offers an interdisciplinary graduate course on GIS that is open to all graduate students on the campus.
Currently, a non-software based course on spatial analysis is being developed for students, researchers and faculty members so that when applicable spatial analysis can be an integral part of research at the Medical Center.
