Research Labs
Laree Hiser, PhD
Dr. Hiser’s primary research focus is to understand the cellular events that occur in response to demyelination.
The long-term goal is to impact the treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and the peripheral neuropathy that accompanies some types of cancer chemotherapy.
Experimental approaches include cell culture, electron and immunofluorescent microscopy, microarrays, quantitative PCR, and protein analysis. High throughput screens are being developed for studying potential new drugs, and one candidate drug that looks promising as a neuroprotective agent is entering animal studies.
This translational research that began at the laboratory bench is moving toward the bedside where it has the potential to have a substantive effect on the quality of life for patients.
