Overview
The University of Mississippi
School of Nursing (SON) provides and supports an environment that encourages
faculty teaching, scholarship, service and practice in keeping with the
mission and philosophy of the program. Our school hosts the only Department
of Research located within a state-supported School of Nursing. SON faculty
members and students are provided the opportunity and support necessary
to develop and implement a professional research and scholarship trajectory
which will enhance the expanding knowledge base of the discipline to impact
the health and welfare of the people of Mississippi and beyond.
Faculty members in the SON select
a role schema that is congruent with their secondary interests and roles
beyond the teaching role. Those who select the teacher/researcher role
must be doctorally prepared and eligible for appointment to a professorial
rank. Faculty will teach four to six credits per semester. Faculty choosing
this role must submit grants with themselves as the Principle Investigator
(PI) and by the end of year three, must bring into the University funding
that equals at least 50 percent of their salary. Additionally, faculty
choosing this role should be eligible for associate or full graduate faculty
appointment by the end of year three.
Members of this faculty group
comprise the SON Research Council. The council oversees the faculty responsibilities
in moving forward the research agenda for the school. One component of
their work includes maintaining a regularly updated Research
Department Resource Manual, which includes operating guidelines
designed to facilitate faculty success in the research arena.
