TRAIN Program

The Jackson Heart TRAIN (Training for Research Awareness in Nursing) Program is designed to provide a focused research training initiative for African American undergraduate nursing students.  The specific aims of this initiative are to:

    • provide opportunities for neophyte minority nurse trainees to participate in research activities that can lead to a research career.
    • increase the number of minrity nursing students completing graduate education.
    • and increase the pool of minority nurse investigators prepared to address health disparities.

    The objectives of the training program are to:

    • increase the trainees' awareness and knowledge of the research process.
    • expose the trainees to a variety of research approaches that address health disparities.
    • increase the trainees' awareness and knowledge of cardiovascular health disparities and their impact in African Americans.
    • improve the trainees' academic and professional development through enrichments activities.
    • facilitate networking between faculty and students of the University of Mississippi medical Center (UMC) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) around ethnic minority research issues.

Description

The School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, in conjunction with the Jackson Heart Study (JHS), conducts a nine-week summer program each year for minority nursing students enrolled in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This program is made possible through a grant for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

Students participate in a structured program designed to acquaint them with research issues, clinical trials, clinical care, and methodologies affecting ethnic minority communities. Additionally, students will receive instruction and training on strategies for strengthening their application for entrance into graduate nursing programs.

Eligibility

Minority nursing students who are juniors at the time of application at the University of Mississippi Medical Center or a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) may apply to Jackson Heart TRAIN.

Selection Criteria:

  • An acceptable GPA

  • Academic transcript
  • Three letters of reference
  • Essay."Why I am Interested in Cardiovascular Research and How I Will Use the Experience Gained in the Future"

Financial Support

Students will receive a stipend, housing allowance, and travel reimbursement toward domestic travel to and from Jackson, Mississippi.

Housing

Assistance will be given for students needing housing. Female students have the option of using housing on UMC campus. Housing for male students will be arranged.

Application Deadline for 2006 TRAIN

Application and support documents are due March 15, 2006.

The staff will consist of select faculty and staff of the UMC School of Nursing, Jackson Heart Study, Jackson State University, and Tougaloo College.
